Girl's family sues rapper in sex attack, seeks damages

HOUSTON (AP) - Rap musician Carlos Coy, sentenced to 45 years in prison for molesting a girl, has been sued by the 10-year-old's relatives who seek damages in the attack.

Coy, known professionally as 'South Park Mexican,' remained Thursday in Harris County Jail while awaiting his appeal of the aggravated sexual assault conviction.

The lawsuit, filed anonymously on Wednesday as Mary Doe on behalf of Jane Doe, a minor, seeks an unspecified amount of money from Coy.

During the sentencing phase of his trial in May, the entertainer testified that he did not attack the girl, who was at Coy's home to spend a night with his daughter last Labor Day weekend.

The victim, who was nine years old at the time, accused Coy of inappropriately touching her during the overnight stay at his southeast Houston home.

Coy, 31, "used his position of power and fame and his relationship with the victim's family to gain the confidence and trust of the minor child and her parents leading up to the sexual assault," stated documents filed by attorney Edward J. Hennessy in the lawsuit.

The victim's father, formerly a close friend of Coy's, told the rapper after his sentencing that he had first felt pity for him and his family. But he changed his mind when Coy showed no remorse or sympathy for the girl.

Coy's defense lawyer, Chip Lewis, said the girl's family was motivated by money.

"They will try to get any royalties or whatever they can get their hands on," said Lewis, who plans to help Coy in the civil lawsuit.

The rapper, who was also fined the maximum $10,000 for the offense, must serve 22 years before he could be eligible for parole.

Four other charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child are pending against Coy.

Before his legal troubles, Coy helped launch Dope House Records and had at least six albums, with collective sales topping 1.5 million.
