AUSTIN MUSIC FOUNDATION CONFERENCE

It went down last night at the Lucky Lounge Austin Tx. Austin Music Foundation held their regular music conference last night with an all-star panel and one big surprise. The topic was Indie Labels: The Real Deal
ME TV (Austin's 24 hour music Channel) was in the house filming Mr. Bavu Blakes new show called "Smooth".

Monday October 2nd 2006 5:00pm I went to Rapid Ric's house right after work to hang out with my new roommates, when I got there Mr. Blakes, Da Ryno, Gerald Geezy and K Paul were there chilling. I was ready to have a beer and relax and chit chat with Bavu since I hadn't seen him in a few weeks. He said he was getting ready to head downtown to do an interview with Mathew Knowles, aka Beyonce's dad, aka head of World Music Ent, home of Destiny's Child and our homies group The Mojoe Family, at the AMF conference and asked if I wanted to come along. Hell yeah!!! So I took off downtown thinking that I was only gonna be there for an hour or so. Turns out I was there all night long. I got there around 5:50 and saw my man Vaughn chilling outside the Lucky Lounge. Yo what up Big V. Vaughn is a cool ass dude I met during this years SXSW fest. He works for Hot 93.3 here in Austin and is a straight grinder. If anyone has a major show or project coming up hit him up.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I ended up chilling outside with Vaughn until the doors opened. Bavu was already inside interview Mr. Knowles so I didn't get a chance to snap any shots of them together. That's unfortunate because that's why I went in the first place. The night ended up being pretty productive though. I ended up doing a little networking and running into some ol buddies such as Easy Lee, Tre and Aaron from the Mojoe family, who I had no idea were popping through, saw my ol pal Jason Krell the bar manager for Lucky Lounge, UZ, Eddie and Dru Fay from ME TV, Rich the bar manager for Antone's and of course Vaughn.
I also met some really nice beautiful girls volunteering for AMF.
Shanti S. and Stephanie K.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Steph just moved to Texas from New York??!!!! Go Yankees, I'll be rooting for them in the playoffs!!
Shanti eave me your contact info on my myspace page and I'll be sure to invite you to the next VEHICULAR show. Which is actually this Thursday night at Speak Easy on 4th www.myspace.com/tonycee

Ok now back to the show. Bavu did his interview with Mr. Knowles before the show started while I mingled and took pictures.
I found these little buckets pretty cool. You could drop business cards, flyers and demos for each panelist to check out. Now whether they check em out or not is anyone's guess.

I was so impressed with some of the panelist. They told the crowd some funny stories and gave us lots of great information. The panel included:

Mathew Knowles, President and CEO of
Music World Entertainment, Houston, TX

Music World Entertainment's catalog of artists
includes: Beyonce Knowles, Destiny's Child,
Lil J. Xavier, Sunshine Anderson

Phil Hinkle, A&R for Century Media, Los
Angeles, CA

Century Media's catalog of artists includes:
Arch Enemy, Celtic Frost, Lacuna Coil, Strapping
Young Lad

Randy Miller, partner at Brando Records,
Dallas, TX

Brando's catalog of artists includes: Blue
October, Greatness in Tragedy, Zayra Alvarez,
SouthFM

Joe Swank, radio promotions for Yep Roc
Records, Chapel Hill, NC

Yep Roc's catalog of artists includes:
Billy Bragg, Robyn Hitchcock, Apples in Stereo, Jim
Lauderdale

Brad Turcotte, president of Compadre Records,
Houston, TX

Compadre's catalog of
artists includes: Billy Joe Shaver, Honeybrowne,
James McMurtry, Townes Van Zandt

I had no idea what to expect at this thing so I grabed a beer took a seat by the bar and just listened to what everyone had to say and they had some great things to say.
Mr. Knowles is a funny guy. He started talking about 'radio' and how it's not their number one priority as a marketing tool and this and that. He kept clowning them until someone told him that the conference is going on a podcast he just laughed and said with a big smile "I love you radio!! I love you radio!!" It was a funny moment.
One of my favorite panelist was Phil Hinkle, A&R for Century Media, he was talking some real shit. I wasn't prepared to take any notes so I can't wait to see the video for this conference. Podcast?? I guess that means if you have an IPOD you can watch. I don't have an IPOD and really don't intend on buying one. Does that mean I'm shit out of luck? I hope not.
Ok so the conference was cool and you should look for the Podcast and if you find it let me know how I can get it and watch it.

See when you get signed to a major deal that doesn't mean it's time for you to relax and sit on your ass, NO, it means that it's time to put it into overdrive and show your label that they made a great decision in signing you. For example The Mojoe Family didn't have to be at a music conference about indie labels. They are already signed, but they came any way to slanged their debut Cd. Thanks Easy for the copy.

Ok so I said there was a big surprise. As you can see I was chilling upstairs with Bavu taking pictures and having some fun. Brad Turcotte walks up stairs for his interview and I look at him and he looks at me and he is like "Hey I know you, your last name is Chapman. You have a sister named Melissa. Hey we went to high school together!!" and I'm like "Yeah dude I recognize you too". It turns out we did go to high school together!!! How fucking strange and cool at the same time!! We talked for about ten minutes about what we do, how we are, our old friends etc...Man San Marcos High has turned out a friend good men. You got me of course the head of the class, Salih and Tomar Williams of Carnival Beats producers for Mike Jones, Bun B, Big Moe, A3, Basswood etc. Alex Espinosa producer for film maker Robert Rodriguez and it's late so I can't think any more. Any way, he invited me to his office in Houston when I'm down there next week. I hope to cover a whole bunch of good shit while I'm there. Well............

That's a rap!!!

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD 2006

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2006

Here we go again. Day 2 in Mexico.

The next morning our room phone is ringing off the hook and no one wants to answer it. It's already 11:30am and check-out time happens to be at 11am. I always thought check-out time was at 12, but whatever. They said we had to go. Everyone was dragging ass for real, no one wanted to get up. First thing we did when we packed and left the room was stop and to get something to eat. Everyone ordered the menudo and ate it all up, except for Wes, he wasn't feeling it. lol. Man that menudo was great!
So now that we got our stomaches taken care of we headed over to Jay's house to get some supplies to head out to Lake Amestad. Stopped by H.E.B, which is a grocery store in Texas, packed up the Yukon and headed down to the lake. Man this lake is bad ass. I was told that it is the biggest man made lake in either Texas or the U.S.A. not sure which one. Anyway, we take this treachous road to the lake. I mean this road was rocky, bumpy, muddy, just basically fucked up. It was nothing like those nice roads in Mexico, it was terrible.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ok now I want you to make a mental note about this part of the trip because I think it comes back to haunt us later. So we drive about two miles down this fucked up road and finally make it to some steap ass cliff where Jay says we are setting up. Ummmmmm oooook, we park next to a nice covered picnic table with a nice bathroom next to it and we are fixing to climb down a cliff with all the groceries and a large Bar-B-Q pit???? What?? Did I hear right?? Uhhh yes I did because everyone gets out and start hauhling shit down the cliff. The view of the lake was amazing. It felt like we were at the ocean.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Me, Wes and Ric get stuck carrying the BBQ pit down the steap side of the cliff. I'm actually just getting in their way so I let go half way there while they carry it the rest of the way. On the way down Wes steps on a cactus and has to stop because he has a big ass cactus needle lodged in his toe, Ric knocks his toe into something on the way down too and takes a seat in a lot of pain. I get a big ass bruise on my forearm where the BBQ pit was resting while I was carring it. Ok so we finally make it down the cliff. Man it was worth the walk because after we get everything situated I jump in the water and boy was the water nice.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Everyone else jumps in and we all just relax.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
We have all the goodies you need to have a good time at the lake.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Eventually, everyone is hungry so Jay gets the pit ready and cooks up some burgers.
A few of Ric, Jay and Ax's friends show up and chill with us and have some food. We are all just lounging around drinking and talking about what we want to do that night. It's getting late and the sun is going down so I whip out the camera.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Rapid Ric smoking a cig. I think this is a nice shot.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Wes and Me acting stupid
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I ended up getting a bad sunburn and I also cut my toe pretty bad in the water, lol. Oh well. I had a great time and we took some great pictures. I'd like to do it again sometime.

Well, we didn't end up leaving the lake until around 8pm I think. So it's time to go back down that treachous, rocky, bumpy, muddy road again. Remember to make that mental note about the road. We head straight to Jay's house to drop off all the supplies we brought and then head to Jay's Barbar shop so Ric could get a hair cut. We chill out there for a little while and then find out that Chalie Boy, Magno, Ryno, Lester Roy, Kinfolk Joe are in town and have a room that they don't need anymore because they are heading home early. So we head to the room, and meet up with everyone, relax, shower and change. It's probably around 11:30 by the time we are ready to leave. Oh yeah, by the way, everyone decided to go to Mexico for one last horrah. Supposedly it's bikini night or fest or something like that and everyone says we should go. Magno, Lester Roy and Kenfolk Joe decide that they want to go to Mexico with us. At this point my camera is dead and out of batteries. Damn!!! There was a lot of action that I didn't get shots off. So we all head off to Mexico, find parking all head straight to some club. It was packed!! Like of Americans there in Mexico. It was labor day weekend so I guess everyone made the trip. The night was cool. There was a little drama, but nothing major. Rapid Ric had to be at the Austin airport at 8am for a flight to New York. He had a show there with Oxy Cotton. I think she calls those shows Screw York City or something like that. Press cool stuff. So we end up leaving the club at 2am and head back to Austin with little room for error. I think the drive from Mexico to Austin is a little over 4 hours long. We head back to the room, load up the car and head home. Finally. What a great weekend. We had so much fun. Now we could all relax and sleep. Johnny O volentered to drive back, while Ax sat shotgun and kept him company while he drove. Me and Wes sat in the back, while Ric made himself a little bed in the back of the Yukon and tried to get some sleep. Serenity now........................we slept.
All of a sudden I wake to a LOUD CRASH!!! The car is swerving and then another LOUD NOISE. Then screaming, yelling, panicing. I lift my head and see head lights coming in our direction. I put my head back down and hold on. Finally, everything just stops....................calm............................Damn what the fuck just happened. We are sitting in the middle turning lane of a four lane highway type road in the middle of now where. We all get out and inspect the cause. TWO BLOWOUTS!!! Not ONE, but TWO!!! Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ok so luckily Magno and the rest of his crew were following us because they stopped and gave us a hand and survey the mess with us. At this point it is 3am and we are still about 3 1/2 hours away from Austin and remember Ric had to be at the airport at 8am.
Ok time to remember back to that mental note. My theroy was that the tires were damaged on that rocky, bumpy, muddy road, but you will find out that wasn't the case a few days later. So we are all wondering what just happened. Johnny O was the driver and he says that the right front tire blew out which caused him to swerve to the right, which caused him to jump the curb, which caused the back right tire to blow and the rim to shatter. We spend about an hour trying to come up with soluctions and at least change one of the tires. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Everyone agrees that Magno should take Ric to the airport while Me, Wes, Ax and Johnny stay behind and fix the mess in the morning.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
So Ric leaves and it is now 4am. Axsel comes up with a plan to walk to a Wal-Mart at 7am, which is about 2 miles down the road and ask the automotive department guys to leave their job, drive 2 miles down the road and help us. He wants them to bring their HUGHE jack, a new tire with a new rim and to put on our spare. Ok that's fine. So I came up with a PLAN B. Nothing wrong with having a back up plan. I'm not going to get into all the details of my plan and to make a long story short, Axsel's plan works!!!! Finally, we are on the road again. It's 8am or something. I don't even remember. We are crusing, happy, laughing and then damn a cop pulls us over in the city of Hondo, Texas. Calls for back up and searches the vehicle for drugs and weapons. lol. They didn't find anything and let us go. I didn't get home until 1pm and I went straight to sleep when I got home. Real quick, back to that mental note, come to find out that Johnny O feel asleep at the wheel. That's all I'm going to say about that. All I can say is that we are lucky we are alive.

SATURDAY SEPT 2ND, 2006

Saturday September 2nd, 2006

So the Whut It Dew Family picks me up Saturday morning at my house in San Marcos, Texas. From there we head straight to Del Rio, Texas. We search for a hotel on Labor Day weekend, settle down, watch TV, etc. etc.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
and then head to Acuna, Mexico, for sound check.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Acuna was only about 10 minutes from our hotel. When we got to the border, the line of traffic leaving Mexico was about two miles long!! There was no one trying to get into Mexico lol. So we drive across the border, park and then load into the club. Man this club was nice. A lot nicer then almost all the clubs in Austin.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ok so we load in, do sound check and head out.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ric and Axsel are from these parts, so they take us to a little place to eat in Mexico. I love Mexican food so I was all for eating real Mexican food. We had some sort of fajita meat with corn tortillas and all I can say is that the food was delicious.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Alright, so we got our grub on and head out to meet Ric's Dad. I have no idea were his dad lives, but it was somewhere deep into Mexico.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Man I have to tell you guys that the roads we drove on were better than the roads that I drive on every day in America. NO SHIT!!! The roads were nice, man, I mean nice. Just think about the best roads in America and that's what we were driving on. We get to Ric's house and his Dad is cool as shit.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
He offers all of us something to drink and hangs out with us for a while. So get this, we are chilling out under the shade of some tall trees having a beer when all of a sudden this raccoon scurries down the tree right where we are standing. Man I jumped real quick, but then calmed down when Ric said that the raccoon is tame and lives in that tree. It was a baby raccoon too. Lol. One of Ric's Dad's friends proceeded to feed the coon a chicken bone and it ran up the tree to feed. Pretty cool shit.

After that we get on the road out of Mexico. So we get to the border and then we get the 5th degree by border patrol. We get asked to pull over to the side so they can bring out the drug dogs and search the vehicle and run all of our licenses. So after about 30 minutes of wasting everyone's time we are off -- headed to the room to shower and change and get ready for the big show in Mexico. Finally, we get there. So we get all ready and hop in the Yukon and head BACK to Mexico. When we get there it is packed. Just think 6th street on a much smaller scale, but this place can still hold its own. So we get to the club and there is a long line of people trying to get into the club. So we go around everyone, get into the club and head straight to the DJ booth. Inside the club it was already packed, but it's fixing to get even more packed in just an hour or two.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
So while Ric is spinning everyone else is chilling having a drink and just getting comfortable with the scene. Axsel seems to know everyone in the club so he is busy mingling with everyone.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Me, Wes and Johnny O are chilling out taking pictures of everyone.

Buela is doing his own thing with his friends, hooking up with chicks and getting his groove on.

Jay is posted up with me and Wes. We actually got to the club at 12 and I don't think we left until around 4 or 5 if I'm not mistaken. The clubs there in Mexico stay open all night long so we took advantage of that. The people there at the club where from all over the place. Del Rio, Mexico, Austin, Dallas etc.. Everyone there was suprisingly cool.

All and all we had a great time and the weekend only got better. After we left the club we hooked up with some of Ric, Axsel, Jay and Johnny's friends. We went to one of their houses, chilled for about 10 minutes and split. Ric was seriously exhausted. Friday night he did the Rakim show, stayed up until 4am, got up at 6am, went to the radio station to spin from 6am to 10am, came home and got ready for Mexico, slept about 3 hours on the road and that's it. So by the time his gig was over in Mexico, the dude was about to crash and burn hard and he did. LoL.
It's all good because he had all of his closest friends around him. Ok so we leave and head back to the room sweaty, hungry, tired and trying to open the door but the dead bolt is locked!!!???? Axsel is in the room and decided to lock all of us out. Lol. Ric takes a nap in the hallway.

15 minutes later Axsel opens the door. We head straight to bed. Lights out, the night is over.

Check in tomorrow for the conclusion of our adventures.
